Dina Meza

Military commanders of the National Preventive Police of the Naval Base of Puerto Castilla, representatives of landowners and businessmen allegedly met on May 18 to plan the assassination of 36 leaders of the area, whose deaths would cost about 11 million lempiras, as reported this weekend in a statement by the People's National Front, the Department of Colón, Aguán Valley.
This information flows within a climate of uncertainty about the life of human rights defenders, journalists and popular leaders in the country, at great risk in Honduras.

According to the statement of the National Resistance Front of Colon, on Tuesday, May 18 this year the military commander of the National Preventive Police, naval base in Puerto Castilla, Fifteenth Battalion, representatives of business landowners, Miguel Facusse, Reinaldo Canales, and René Morales, along with some who think they are business men in the municipality of Tocoa, Trujillo, Saba, Sonaguera and Bonito Oriental, met in the city of Trujillo, in order to discuss mechanisms to eliminate leaders of the National Resistance Front of the Aguán region, of the peasant movement of Aguan MCA and of the Unified Peasant Movement of Aguan MUCA.
The document notes that the meeting broke up a list of 36 leaders, landlords who pay the sum of 11 million lempiras, not counting the large number of vehicles already gave them to police and military in the region .
During the week of May 11 to 16, in addition to the military and police which remain in the region of Aguan, a considerable number of members of military intelligence and the Honduran Air Force accompanied by Colombian-born military also arrived.

It is noted that to commit the crimes they will act in covert operations like ones with hired killers, using the information they made through profiling carried out with cameras, camcorders and direct persecution of leaders, denounced events to human rights organizations in the previous weeks .
According to the regional National Resistance Front , that will be the last operation performed by the repressive forces before demilitarizing the Lower Aguán.
"We hold responsible the landlords of this area, operators of justice, the national army, for what may befall the popular leadership of this region of northern Honduras," says the final part of the statement.
